Smiled at the Sky

By: Shyanne Sarris

Sitting on an old porch,

I smiled at the sky.

And watched as the wind

Gently carried time.

And then I closed my eyes,

At the thought of us.

Glad we lived a life

Sad to be left behind.

I rocked and rocked,

My chair squeaking as it moved.

I breathed slowly

Wanting to leave too.

The wind caressed my face,

And dried my trickling tears.

The sun hugged my skin

And for an instant, I felt alive again.

Then finally the moment came,

I smiled at the sky.

And whispered,

“I’m ready to go,

Take me to where my love awaits.”

Then the sky smiled back at me,

And it took me to a happy place.
